Review Dundarave Golf Course Cardigan, PE
 | Snake | Sep-15-2008 |

|
| Greens: | 10/10 | The greens at Dundarave are quite large and have great speed. Contours were not drastic but because of the quickness almost every putt had some break.
I had my first 4 putt of the season.
Greens are quite firm. |
| Fairways: | 9/10 | Fairways are substantial in width but I still knocked a few into the lumber.
At 150 yards is a stake. Sprinkler heads yardage printed on them. Even with the markings it's often difficult to find your yardage. |
| Tees: | 8/10 | Tees were generally good and blocks were quite width enabling you to adjust your angle. A couple of tees were a bit beaten.
Five tee decks to choose from. |
| Course Design: | 9/10 | I counted 117 bunkers in the yardage book.
Bunkers were filled with red PEI sand. A great touch to remember the course by. The red sand is a little coarser then white sand and becomes firm when wet.
Dundarave is a great layout and challenge. It's a healthy walk and most golfers take a cart. |
| Value for $$$: | 9/10 | Another great PEI course for under $100. Every golf needs to experience courses like Dundarave so they can understand what it's like to play on a top course.
If any one needs a fourth, ask me. |
| Difficulty: | 8/10 | Lots of bunkers. Lots of wind. Yesterday I said I played in the strongest winds of the year (at Crowbush Cove), but today beat those winds easily.
Some huge, deep bunkers can cause problems for any one. Expect to be in at least one per round.
Don't underestimate the greens. |
| Scenery: | 8/10 | The beauty is in the layout of the hole before you. Accentuated by the red bunker sand, the view is like no other.
Underbrush is thick, thick, thick. You won't be retrieving many of your own stray balls out of this stuff. |
| Staff: | 9/10 | A busy crew. There were lots of staff seen on the course and the beverage cart was around frequently.
In the clubhouse the staff was always available to help a golfer. |
| Clubhouse: | 9/10 | The pro shop had an excellent supply of clothing but lacked any clubs (beyond rentals). However, the clubhouse complex was well designed having a few conference rooms and a decent lounge. |
| Other Intangibles: | 8/10 | The ball washers often varied location at tees.
Cart paths were paved throughout and flow of course was superb.
The 9th hole finishes well away from the clubhouse so don't expect to play 9 holes only. |
87/100 I felt I putted well and still had 40 putts. The wind played havoc with my ball.
Dundarave and Brudenell share the same clubhouse. |

| Greens: | 10/10 | The large greens were true and very fast. Many had false fronts. The subtle breaks often made long putts tough to read. These were a real treat to play. |
| Fairways: | 8/10 | The fairways were well-maintained and cut to a consistent level throughout the course. The standard markings included a 150 yard marker plus yardage markings on many of the sprinkler heads. The yardage from all of the sprinkler heads was also included in the course booklet. |
| Tees: | 7/10 | Several options were available for tee boxes. Three sets were in use on the day we played and one more was available but not in play. All were quite wide but a couple of them were in rough shape. |
| Course Design: | 10/10 | The course layout was excellent and included many bunkers. There were no holes so close to another that you saw players from another hole except in the distance and there was never a concern of balls being hit from an adjacent fairway. There was a good variety of uphill and downhill holes with only a couple having large elevation changes. Given the bunkering, this course would likely present different challenges in differing weather conditions. |
| Value for $$$: | 8/10 | The rate is fair for a course of this calibre. We certainly enjoyed our round and I would play this course again. |
| Difficulty: | 9/10 | This course played very tough for us because of the strong winds on the day we played. It was fair and playable by golfers at most levels. The numerous well-situated bunkers would add a challenge to anyone struggling with their control. |
| Scenery: | 8/10 | The surroundings were pleasant and the course was well maintained. Due to recent heavy rains, some of the rough was very wet and several areas on some fairways were roped off for repair. |
| Staff: | 10/10 | All of the members of staff that we encountered were very friendly and courteous. Both those on the course and in the clubhouse were helpful and easy to talk to. We encountered the beverage cart several times and we enjoyed the sandwiches made with homemade bread. |
| Clubhouse: | 10/10 | The beautiful clubhouse included meeting rooms, a large lounge and a Pro Shop which was well stocked with balls, clothing and golf souvenirs. We found it a little odd that we didn't see clubs for sale in the Pro Shop, but we later learned that this is common practice at PEI courses. |
| Other Intangibles: | 10/10 | The cart paths were paved throughout the course and often included yardage markings at different points. Directions to the next hole were always clear. The course booklet was very helpful for determining club selection and judging distances. In spite of the strong blowing winds which made play tough, the round was enjoyable. |
90/100 A very pleasant round on a course that I would definitely play again. |
