Review Brudenell River Golf Course Cardigan, PE
 | Snake | Sep-19-2008 |

|
| Greens: | 8/10 | Most greens are quite large as are most premium golf course in PEI. Green #3 is rather unique in that it is shaped like the head of Mickey Mouse.
We were a bit unfortunate to play Brudenell after the greens had just been sanded. |
| Fairways: | 8/10 | Fairways were wet in low areas as the island has had a tremendous amount of rain this year. A record rainfall surpassed a record set over 50 years ago.
Yardages are difficult to determine as only 150 yard stakes can be seen. Sprinkler heads and other plates require some work to find. |
| Tees: | 8/10 | Tees are a good size and are of a substantial width offering desired angles for your tee shots.
Three holes have stairways to viewing areas; #4, #6, and #15.
Three sets of tee boxes. |
| Course Design: | 8/10 | Brudenell is one of the few courses on PEI that I've played that can be walked without much difficulty.
The course has 6 par 5s, 6 par 4s, and 6 par 3s.
I really liked the par 3 10th named "Shimmering Water". Wind can make this one a real challenge and the centre of the green is elevated which causes everything to roll to the side. |
| Value for $$$: | 8/10 | Brudenell is priced $10 less then its sister course, Dundarave. In my opinion, it is a lesser course and does not offer the same challenge or visual splendor.
Brudenell is an older course (24 year older then Dundarave) and offers memberships where Dundarave does not. |
| Difficulty: | 7/10 | Brudenell is not quite as challenging as other top courses in PEI but it does sport a good reputation. It's not my favourite course on the island but it is one that my skill level can play without much frustration. |
| Scenery: | 5/10 | A few nice holes along with a fountained pond between #1 and #8 greens.
Trees are dense yet underbrush is clean. A lift is normally required from trees but often the ball can be found. |
| Staff: | 8/10 | A busy crew. There were lots of staff seen on the course but no beverage cart.
In the clubhouse the staff was always available to help a golfer. |
| Clubhouse: | 9/10 | The pro shop had an excellent supply of clothing but lacked any clubs (beyond rentals). However, the clubhouse complex was well designed having a few conference rooms and a decent lounge. |
| Other Intangibles: | 9/10 | A great yardage book is offered with your green fee. It's a valuable resource.
Cart paths and directions around the course are superb.
Wind can pose a problem on a number of holes. |
78/100 Brudenell was established in 1969. Being an older course the overall yardage is a bit shorter than expected from the tips.
It's not one of my favourites on the island but still a recommended play. |

| Greens: | 7/10 | Average sized greens held approach shots well. Most were sloped and had subtle breaks. On the day that we played the greens had been sanded, making speed tougher to gauge. When at their best these are probably very nice; but the day that we played, they were not at their best. |
| Fairways: | 6/10 | Overall the fairways were not bad, but on several holes there was cut grass all over the place and a couple of them were really soggy with long grass. Recent weather conditions were likely to blame but when we played, the fairways were not at their best either. The standard markings included a 150 yard marker plus yardage markings on many of the sprinkler heads. |
| Tees: | 9/10 | All tees were in good shape except for one hole where the tees were all on one tee box while the others were being repaired. All were level with engraved markers in the ground with the yardage indicated at each tee. |
| Course Design: | 9/10 | The course layout was pleasant with an enjoyable variety of holes. Many holes set up well for the player who likes "target" golf. The separation between holes was such that there was never a concern of balls being hit from an adjacent fairway. Elevation changes were minimal for most holes. Bunkers were well positioned and not excessive in number. |
| Value for $$$: | 8/10 | The cost to play this course is fair when it is in normal playing condition. Despite the conditions we experienced on the greens and fairways, this looks like it should usually be a good course. I look forward to returning to play it under normal conditions. |
| Difficulty: | 8/10 | For the free swinging golfer, there is trouble to be had if you're not accurate. The course sets up well for an accurate hitter. The ability to master the greens is likely another key element to playing this course well. |
| Scenery: | 9/10 | The surroundings were very nice. Apart from some fairways being wet, and covered with long grass clippings, the course was well-maintained. There were some flower beds and a couple of nice fountains on the course as well. |
| Staff: | 7/10 | In the small amount of interaction we had with staff, they were friendly and professional. The beverage cart was not in use on the day that we played. |
| Clubhouse: | 10/10 | The beautiful clubhouse included meeting rooms, a large lounge and a Pro Shop which was well stocked with balls, clothing and golf souvenirs. We found it a little odd that we didn't see clubs for sale in the Pro Shop, but we later learned that this is common practice at PEI courses. |
| Other Intangibles: | 8/10 | The cart paths were good. They were usually paved for a while from the tees and then again near the greens. Directions to the next hole were always clear. The course booklet was quite helpful and gave additional yardages beyond those found on the course itself. |
