Maple Estate Golf & Country Club
Cloyne, ON

Dan PJun-18-2010
Greens: 3/10The greens were quite small and sometimes difficult to see transition from fairway to green.
Greens were uneven and there was visibility of ant hills on some.
Flags were all blue making them hard to see depending on distance.
Fairways: 4/10Yardage markers were located on one side of the fairway at 100, 150, and 200 yards on most holes.
Fairways were often quite rough with varied width.
Tees: 4/10Tees were quite narrow and didn't offer a lot of options.
No signage was visible at tees but blocks did have the hole number identified on them.
Course Design: 5/10The courses design is very erratic. There are quite a few blind shots including the first three to start your round. The finishing hole (#9) is blind for the first two shots and is very narrow.
Hole #2 is the first blind par 3 that I can ever recall playing.
Maple Estate has some minor elevation changes.
I counted three bunkers on course.
Value for $$$: 5/10I expected a bit more for the dollar as I've played many courses in this price range. I'm guessing the volume of golfers contribute to the price and the current pricing is required to keep the course alive.
Difficulty: 6/10A few holes are very challenging. Add in the small greens and course conditions and a good score is very tough to come by.
Scenery: 6/10This is how I expect many a cottage country course to look.
Staff: 10/10When I arrived I was asked (in the parking lot) to start on hole #3 as greens were being sanded. The lady in the clubhouse asked me whether I wanted water before I started.
Service was #1 and I got the feeling my visit was very appreciated.
Clubhouse: 6/10You basic clubhouse with basic golf supplies.
Surprisingly, the front of the scorecard identifies indoor golf simulators for 2010. Who would think it?
Other Intangibles: 5/10Adding to the difficulty of the course was the bugs. I constantly had half a dozen nibbling insects landing on my body.
Ball washers on every hole.
A home made scorecard did the trick. Keep your eyes on the course layout as you can get disoriented.
54/100
Maple Estate struck me as a family run business trying to establish itself.
Bring your camera as this is the sort of course where all kinds of wildlife will be encountered.
