Chester Golf Club
Chester, NS

SnakeJul-4-2008
Greens: 8/10Greens at Chester can be tough as they all seem to slope away from the centre. It's very easy to 3 putt if the pin is located near an edge. More than once our first putt rolled off the green.
Greens 4, 5, and 6 are quite large.
Fairways: 8/10Fairways on the front 9 were quite hard (as well as the greens). We tried to aim for the front of the green and let the ball bounce on. This didn't seem to work for the same on the back 9.
A few mogul-type fairways.
The standard three stake colours can be found for yardage.
Tees: 8/10Tees are not overly large but were in good shape. Signage at each hole shows a good layout of the current hole.
Three sets of tees to choose from.
Course Design: 7/10The first 4 holes on the back 9 are quite narrow and are a good test for any golfer. Strategic tee shots can help on quite a few holes as sloping fairways will see a ball slide into the rough.
The course from the tips is just over 6,000 yards so it's not a long hike.
Value for $$$: 7/10Membership is an extreme bargain at under $500 for residents of Chester. Green fees are bread and butter for the club. The price is on par for the province.
Difficulty: 7/10Putting balances out the yardage.
A good putting round should produce a low score.
Scenery: 8/10The beauty of Chester is looking out over the water. The underbrush can be thick.
A few environmentally sensitive areas.
Staff: 8/10The beverage cart was around a few times.
The Nova Scotia pace seems unhurried and was most prevalent at Chester. We waited almost 1/2 hour for our breakfast and missed our tee-off picking up half way down the first fairway. We waited longer for our seafood chowder after our round.
Staff was always polite.
Clubhouse: 7/10An older style clubhouse. Dining area was very homey. A bar area offered a more social seating arrangement then the dining room.
The pro shop (a separate building) was well stocked with clothing.
Other Intangibles: 7/10Weather along the Nova Scotia coast can change quickly. The sky grew darker a few times while we played but the rain held off.
Navigation of course is easy.
A misprint on the scorecard for rating needs to be fixed.
75/100
Thanks to George and Ed who accompanied us while we played. Having members advice during play is always an added bonus.

Greens: 8/10The greens seem to be dome shaped with everything rolling away from the center. They were a tough read and even tougher to play. I three putted at least 4 times on this day. Not fun.
Fairways: 8/10The fairways were average to a little above average. There was some nice rolling hills on many of the fairways which made for a few uneven stances. The front nine doesn't play or look the same as the back nine. You'll like the differences.
Tees: 8/10The tees were in good shape, but not too large. The signage was very helpful when you've never played the course before. Three different tee boxes to choose from.
Course Design: 8/10I liked the Chester design as it plays a little harder then the average course. Rolling fairways, dome type greens, with some tight tee shots to contend with. It's not very long, but you still have to think about every shoot.
Value for $$$: 8/10I still can't believe how cheap golf club memberships are in Nova Scotia. It makes you want to move there. This place runs around the same as other Nova Scotia courses with a club membership priced under $500. Now that's a bargain.

Difficulty: 8/10As I mentioned before, Chester can be a really tough course and it all comes down to the putting. If you're putting good, then you'll do just fine. But if you're off, like I was, then it won't be as pretty. I shot an 87 and it was all about the putting. I was putting for birdie many times, but walked away with a par or bogey most of the time.
Scenery: 8/10Again, another Nova Scotia course with an amazing view of the ocean. How fortunate they are?
Try to stay out of the thick stuff, especially the underbrush. It's a little tough to get out of. And remember to stay out of the environmentally sensitive areas. If you hit one in there, just walk away.

Staff: 8/10Nice people in Chester, Nova Scotia. Everyone was so polite and friendly to talk to. But don't expect to rush through this one in a hurry as everyone seems to be in a lower gear. Everything was a little longer then normal. The food, the service, and the game. But that's OK, just relax and enjoy your day.
Clubhouse: 7/10Nothing fancy here, but still nice and clean. Everything seemed to be well organized but their speed was a little too slow for me. Everything was available.
Other Intangibles: 7/10Good weather, good golf, good people and good food so that's alright by me.
The cart paths and hole locations were easy to maneuver through which is always a bonus.

Thank you Ed and George. I truly enjoyed your company on this day. It was a real pleasure. It's because of people like you that bring visitors back to Nova Scotia year after year.
Well done N.S.
Thank you.
