Summerland Golf & Country Club
Summerland, BC

Alberta BoundSep-27-2006
Greens: 8/10The greens were very good with two of them new. The fringe was good and consistent and the bunkers were well groomed and had a couple of rakes. A couple of the greens on the back nine had more interesting contours that could make some putts very challenging.

Fairways: 8/10The fairways on the front nine were generous with their landing areas. The first cut was wide enough before you reached the rough. Fairway bunkers were also very well groomed. On a number of holes you could recover from a bad shot as their is only one line of trees separating joining fairways. The fairways were marked at the 150, and 100. On the back nine the fairways were a tighter and plenty of difficulties awaiting you if you stray from the fairways. In a few cases you do not want to be long or the ball will end up at the bottom of a very large and deep canyon
Tees: 8/10The course has four sets of larger tees. They are blue, white, red and gold. All the tees were well cared for with benches, medal coyotes for tee markers, ball washer, shoe cleaner, good signage with a map of the hole on the back nine and the front nine a temporary signs due to the reconstruction and renovations. A number of the holes had elevated tee boxes especially from the first tee and on 11 and 12 on the back nine. There were official distant markers on each tee
Course Design: 8/10The course is very interesting because it has two entirely different sections. The front nine has been redone and will be completed next year. With the new construction this nine should be very nice. The front is on a flat piece of land with water on about three holes. The fairways are lined with mature popular and pine trees. The first two holes follow the edge of the canyon. The back nine is entirely different from the front. It is a true Les Furber mountain course. You have elevated tees, interesting bunkers and ½ the holes follow the canyon. On the 15th hole you have a par five with dog leg right. In the centre of the fairway you have a large tree that comes into play off the tee box and about 150 yards out from the green you have a large rock with some good size junipers growing behind the rock. When you reach the well bunkered green you will find a saddle shaped green. I liked this hole. The second nine is a true mountain style course with tall pine trees while the front nine is a more traditional course
Value for $$$: 9/10At $35 for a 1:30 tee time this is a good course and fun to play. Summerland Golf Club represents good value. Golf carts are not included at this price. They indicated that they rented the power carts by rider rather than by the cart. The power carts were electric and had a wind screen.
Difficulty: 8/10The course is a par 72 with a slope of 126 from the blues and 126 from the reds. The length from the blues is 6635 yards with only one shorter par 4. The slope of 126 for both men and ladies makes for a good round where the course is not too tough but also not easy. The back nine has tighter fairways and more trouble awaiting you if you venture off the fairways.

Scenery: 9/10The course is located on the banks of a spectacular, very steep and deep canyon and is about 250 meters above the lake. We spent some time admiring the views and looking at the rushing water far below. From a number of tee boxes you can look down into the Okanagan Valley and the lake. The front nine has a nice water hole and is flat and very green. The first two holes are along the canyon. From the second tee you can see the lake down below in the valley. The back nine weave their way through pine and spruce trees as well as the canyon.
Staff: 8/10All the staff we meet were very friendly especially the people in the pro shop were very helpful. We did not see a beverage cart or any marshals. The pro shop staff were very accommodating as it took longer to get to the course then we anticipated so they put other groups out in front of us and told us to take our time get ready.
Clubhouse: 6/10The clubhouse was functional, with a large balcony, a good size room for tournaments, locker rooms, a nice bar and eating area. The pro shop was well stocked and the grounds were very nicely landscaped with a paved parking lot
Other Intangibles: 7/10The washrooms had running water, and well spaced around the course. They had one of the old fairways and green available for practice. Cart paths on the back nine are paved.
79/100
We should review his course again next year when the improvements to the front nine are completed.Summerland is a recommend play. The drive to the course, the scenery and the course design are worth taking the time to visit. Most visitors to the valley do not think about getting away from Kelowna and exploring other courses. This course has to be one the best keep secrets in the valley. The value is very good. I think when all the additions, and changes are completed next year it will be very nice. After golf stop and try out some of the vineyards in this area.
