Review
Windermere Golf & Country Club
Edmonton, AB
Alberta BoundJul-7-2006
Greens: 8/10The greens were very good but there were a few that have not recovered from the winter. Most greens are large and do not contain any server slopes.
Fairways: 10/10Wonderful fairways. The course was upgraded over the previous few years and all the fairways have been sodded. The ball sat up well and the fairways looked great.
Tees: 8/10All tees are in very good shape with attractive yardage signs and four different teeing areas.
Course Design: 9/10This course design is excellent. There are very few holes that are similar. It has an elevation change from 5 through 8 that offers excellent views of the river and presents some interesting decisions for the golfer. Number 8 looks directly over the river. Number 11 is outstanding with the new bunkers and the water that comes into play along the river and in front of the green.
Value for $$$: 9/10This is one of the premier private courses in Edmonton. If you can get a game as a guest you will enjoy your day.
Difficulty: 8/10The slope rating says it all about the course. There are a few longer holes that will present a challenge for the average golfer but on the whole the course presents a fair challenge. Some ladies might find the course a little long.
Scenery: 9/10This is a mature course with large trees lining the fairways. The white sand bunkers, large trees and the water make this a very pretty course. The course is set along the North Saskatchewan River with a back drop of steep hills rising from the river. Water comes into play on a number of holes. The rough is trimmed but you can get into trouble if you get off the fairways on the holes are on the boundaries of the course.
Staff: 9/10All the staff that I meet from the pro shop, beverage cart operator, grounds crew and the staff in the clubhouse were very friendly and nice.
Clubhouse: 7/10The club house is older and on the small size but it has a certain feeling to it. The menu is good and offers a better quality then you would traditionally find at a public course. Sit on the screen in deck, have a good meal and enjoy the view of the 18th fairway and green. There is plenty of parking in the paved lot with flowers, BBQ area and other items that make the clubhouse attractive. I did hear some talk, that a new clubhouse might soon be considered.
Other Intangibles: 9/10There is not much that is lacking on this course. They have an outstanding practice area with two putting greens, a chipping green, sand area and a very good driving range. Cart paths are good, directional signs are well placed and there is only one walk between tees that is a little long.
86/100
Last year the course completed a multi-million dollar upgrade. It turned a very good course into an excellent one that looks green and lush in a wonderful river valley setting. If you can take the time to play this course.
