Fairways West Golf Course
Alder Flats, AB
Alberta BoundJuly 27/06
Greens: 6/10The greens were good. They did need cutting and the size was below the average. There were not a lot contours or slopes on the greens.
Fairways: 5/10The fairways were wide, dry with very little in the way of trees along the sides. It had been very hot so the fairways were on the brown side and hard. I did get lots of roll.
Tees: 4/10There was one tee box out of play and so we played from the fairway. There were two tee boxes at each hole.
Course Design: 3/10This course was cut from a field with very little in the way of trees on it. There are maybe two holes that have some mature trees on the back nine. Most of the time you hit to wide fairways in one direction then turn around and come back.
Value for $$$: 6/10Value was good in that we went mid week and had a two for one coupon so we only paid $10 each. It is some place where you can go and hit the driver.
Difficulty: 5/10There is not too much trouble you can get into on this course. It is a long course with some long par fours. There is a pond on the back nine.
Scenery: 4/10There are some rolling green hill is the distance. The main highway runs down the west side of the course. There is not much that would pull you in from the road.
Staff: 7/10The staff I meet were very friendly.
Clubhouse: 4/10Club house is large with one section closed off. It has hotel rooms for rent and their is an RV, camping site there as well. The proshop does not have much in it. We did have a decent evening meal there and the drinks are reasonable. There is a small area outside with about 4 tables.
Other Intangibles: 4/10There is not much more I can add to the above. The weather was hot and we got off just before a storm hit. Everything was average or below average.
48/100
There were a number of people eating dinner in the club house so it must be a decent place for locals and crews working in the area. We wanted to take a drive out and see what was there. I had a good score but it was tough not to score well as not much to protect par other than the length of the course. I would not bother to drive the hour we did to play it again. If I was staying at Buck Lake, which is close by, then I would play it for something to do.
There appeared to be an active mens' league.
