Every wonder how those scorecards are made that show all the contours on the green? It's the Green Reading Level in action.
The Green Reading Level is very similar to what you would use for leveling a picture frame at home except it's designed for the golf course. The circular level has three tips protruding from the bottom to provide stability (like a three legged stool). The fall line slopes away from the highest point of the bubble and shows the severity of slope when the bubble is further away from the center of the level.
It's currently the time of year where I can't go outside to do anything related to golf so I'm stuck practicing my putting on my living room carpet. Using the Green Reading Level I can tell you for certain that my flooring does have a few minors dips.
You can view a video on the Green Reading Level below.

To my knowledge, the Green Reading Level is not allowed during play. But, if you're not in competition, I see no reason why you can't pull it out of your bag to confirm whether you read the green incorrect or simply miss hit your putt. Course members will certainly want to chart their greens so that no surprises will arise at any time during a round.
