Ravenwood does it right! Here's one club that many other courses can take a lesson from. It wasn't just the bag drop, the tee time check in, the starter, the golf cart gps, ordering of food, or the on course extras (water coolers, cleat cleaners, and golf club washers). The entire operation of Ravenwood is a finely oiled machine that offers an entire golfing experience.
After playing a number of golf courses in the Rochester/Finger Lakes area I found Ravenwood to play much closer to courses near home. The greens were varying sizes and shapes, all in great shape with a slightly better than average pace. There wasn't a lot of contour but enough to keep you honest and required a solid read.
The overall course had some elevation change but, I felt, was still very walkable. Ravenwood has a nice flow and requires no explanation for the next hole of play. Each hole feels unto itself and rarely should a golfer from another hole join your fairway. A bordering thick patch of heather will hold stray balls from an adjoining fairway (or keep your own from escaping). The fairways were in excellent shape with good width for someone who drives the ball consistently.
Bunkers were well positioned and visible on every hole. I think it would be difficult to play a round without being in at least one.
Ravenwood has many great holes. A few of my favourites are the par 4 3rd. It requires a drive down the right side of the fairway away from a large pond to the left. With a swale on the green it's important to recognise the pin placement. Holes #14 and #17 are beautiful par 3s that and are worth a photo shoot. Hole #18, a par 5, looks like a simple finishing hole but still can give a lot of problems because of the bunkering. I'm sure others will identify different holes as being the favourites.
My only complaint was the foursome in front of us who were playing from a tee deck that was beyond their ability and slowed our pace of play. I'm glad they were only on the course for the front nine.
Ravenwood also has a well stocked pro shop and has good facilities to host a tournament.
The efficiency of every aspect on and around the course makes Ravenwood a must play.
