Northern Dunes is a par 72, 18-hole championship-style golf course that reaches 6,400 yards from the back tees. The course rolls, twists and winds through some of the finest land in the Heart of the South Bruce Peninsula golf community.
Our course, approximately 15 kilometers from Lake Huron & Sauble Beach, was laid out by famed Canadian designer Steve Young. Location was key in the development of Northern Dunes and it is located central to major tourist areas such as Owen Sound, Wiarton and Sauble Beach. Being only 10 minutes from each destination. Northern Dunes is accessible from all directions and shares the beauty of the Peninsula with those that come to enjoy it year after year.
What Steve Young created at Northern Dunes is a Scottish links course with a contemporary feeling, with lots of long par-4s and bunkers strategically placed and filled with natural sand. The greens are large and there are many bunkers, making club selection and ball placement necessary to shooting a good round. The terrain is gently rolling with some undulations as you travel through the Dunes, but the course is still a very enjoyable walk.
For the most part, the front nine was built over acres of natural sand dunes. There is some forest areas with some shelter from the winds coming off Lake Huron, but be careful when playing because you might not feel the winds where you stand, but its quite another story as you’re hitting balls above the tree level.
The back nine involved some major earth moving, shaping and forming. Notwithstanding, most of the holes look and feel as though Mother Nature herself placed them there.

Good sized greens which were holding at medium putting speed. Excellent autumn conditions with not a ball mark to be seen. Plenty of green side bunkers (appropriate considering the name of the course - Dunes).
Fairways on the front nine required periodic preferred lies and the fairway grass on the back nine was in excellent condition. The Superintendent of Course Maintenance explained that the front nine fairways are primarily built on a sand base (dunes) and with the past long summer drought and shortage of rain water, it took its toll on the grass on the front nine fairways.
The tee boxes were level, nicely trimmed and adorned with attractive stone carved tee markers and clear yardage/hole layout signage.
This course is seven years young and has a lot of potential. We enjoyed its spacious layout and found it to be an easy walking course. For the most part it is relatively flat. Back nine was a little more open so that you could let out more shaft with the driver. Losing golf balls was not an issue.
Very reasonable green fees for this quality of golf course.
Not extremely difficult and offers most golf shots. Some target golf holes.
The Northern Dunes is located in the town of Hepworth in the heart of the scenic Bruce Peninsula. There is an abundance of beautiful pine and deciduous trees through out the course.
We met several staff members and they were very cordial and courteous. The Superintendent of Course Maintenance has recently assumed the additional role of Director of Golf Operations and takes a very keen interest in the establishment.
The relatively new clubhouse facility contains a small pro shop and kitchen/bar area. There is an attached large heated patio eating area. It is apparent that the money has been spent on the golf course itself - where it should be for a relatively new course.
The power golf carts contain course GPS instruments. Washrooms were very clean and well situated throughout the course.
We look forward to playing this course on another occasion.
