Date: 2009-Jul-10 Review by Dan P
Greens were in decent shape but most were on the small side. It was very tough to land anything to stay on a green.
Greens on the back 9 tended to get a bit bigger but more contour was added.
Grass on the fairways was no very thick so the ball tended to be on a hard surface. Markers were plates in the fairway at 200 and 100 yard and the 150 was and upright white tube. Establishing yardage wasn't too difficult. Fairway width varied. Some were quite narrow.
Rarely could I find a flat spot to hit my tee shot. I always felt I was swinging uphill or out of a swale.
Mapleview has a few decent holes but nothing that are truly memorable. Hole #17 has an interesting tee shot over a covered bridge but the gap to put your ball through is small. The approach to the green requires a delicate chip over a pond.
Typically par 3s offer a nice view and setting but at Mapleview they seemed a bit bland.
The tee for hole #3 is in a very tough location and would not be appealing to many golfers.
On the short #8 par 4 you can't see the green plus you have no idea what club to use from the tee.
Tee shots for #7 and #10 are also narrow.
Everything about Mapleview was simply OK. Pricing was average and so was the course.
The front is flat while the back begins to show a bit of elevation change. I played from the Blues at 6183 yards and could probably have moved back to the tips as the course doesn't play tough (even though I shot very poorly).
Around the water the holes are quite nice.
The gentleman in the pro shop was very pleasant and talkative.
The beverage cart was around often and prices were very reasonable.
The outside appearance of the clubhouse is quite nice but a bit plain on the inside.
Not much in the way of golfing supplies is available.
I couldn't enter my score into the Golf Association of Ontario although the scorecard has an OVGA Rating printed on it.
Most rakes were iron and quite heavy to use. Good thing I wasn't in the sand often or I'd probably be tired from raking.
Cart paths were superb! The white sand that was used was packed firmly and riding was smooth.
Mapleview & Country Club is located just outside Perth, Ontario. The town has a beautiful main street that would be desirable by any community. A stop to golf and a stop to shop or eat in town is a very pleasant way to spend a day.
