The original name of the Cedar Brae Golf & Country Club was Cedar Brook Golf and Country Club, a member owned golf course club from its inception in 1922. The original golf course layout was designed by Stanley Thompson and built on 160 acres of farm property stretching from Markham Road in the east to Bellamy Road in the west just south of Lawrence Avenue in Scarborough.
In 1935, selected representatives of the golf membership formed a company called Cedar Brae Limited and bought the assets of Cedar Brook Golf and Country Club for $30,000. Cedar Brae Limited then set up a new Toronto private golf club organization called Cedar Brae Recreation Club and leased the golf course property to the new club for $8,000 per year. The golf membership fee for seniors that year was $50.
In 1939, the golf club name was changed to Cedar Brae Golf & Country Club. During the war years, the Cedar Brae golf course hosted and entertained many in the service and was involved in raising money for war charities.
In 1954, the golf club property was sold to developers and new property was acquired for a country club golf course on Steeles Avenue. A company formed by Art Bamford, George Frost, and Mac Frost, (Golf Leaseholds Limited), built a new Cedar Brae golf course, located just west of our present property.
In 1962, the golf course membership for a Senior was $235. That year, Mac Frost traded for the 156 acres of land just east of the Golf Club known as the Valley. Construction of the new golf course club in the Valley was completed in 1969. Renowned golf course architect and Stanley Thompson disciple, CE (Robbie) Robinson, was the designer of that original Cedar Brae golf course.
In 1970, the golf membership undertook the purchase of the new Valley course and the existing clubhouse, and subsequently became the owners of the Toronto golf course. Under the new ownership, operation and control passed to a Board of Directors elected from the general golf membership for a three-year term.
Cedar Brae has proven over the years to be a destination for golfers seeking the best golf course experience in Toronto. The golf course has also attracted major golf tour events, including the LPGA, numerous Canadian Tours, GAO and Provincial Championships and qualifiers. Visiting golf players regularly praise Cedar Brae's layout, course conditioning, and the large fast greens that require a deft putting touch.
